Serving the Community

Picture
Since my eighth grade year, I have been privileged to be able to participate in serving my community through helping with Special Olympics by officiating Bocce Ball. It gives me a great feeling to be able to help those who are in need.  Working with Bocce Ball is such a rewarding experience. All of the players are happy to be at the games, and they love to play. With Bocce Ball, there are no winners or losers, just athletes and volunteers that come together to have a good time. Everyone has such a wonderful time.

The Game of Bocce Ball

Picture
In the game of Bocce Ball, each team is assigned a set of colored balls. At the Bocce games at Westwood, most of the balls are red and green. A coin is flipped to decide which team will throw the polina, a little white ball that is thrown to determine where the competitors will role their colored balls. The objective of Bocce Ball is to score points by rolling your teams balls as close to the polina as possible. My role in Bocce Ball is the caller. The caller has two flags, one is red and one is green to match the teams' colored balls that they roll. The callers job is to let each team know when they are allowed to roll. I love seeing the smiles on the athletes' faces when they here their team color called to role. It gives me a very satisfying feeling when I know that I have made a difference in peoples' lives. I believe that Bocce Ball is a great way to make a difference in others' lives because it allows you to help people who may not be able to help themselves. Bocce Ball is such a extraordinary organization that gives extraordinary opportunities to extraordinary people.
