Lady Cat Softball: Never Giving Up

Softball Pitcher
Softball is a sport that has become very popular in recent years. Softball started a game similar to baseball, except for girls. In the first version of the game of softball, the ball was pitched underhanded slowly and high in the air. Today, the ball is still pitched underhanded except with a lot more speed and the pitcher hopes to shoot a strike in by the batter into the catcher's mitt. Some pitchers can even fling the ball up to 70 miles per hour. The batting of softball is very similar to the batting of baseball. The mechanics are the same, but the fields are shorter.

I have played baseball at the recreation department since I was four years old. I became acquainted with softball in the fifth grade. I began playing on the junior varsity team in the sixth grade and continued to play until at Westwood the eight grade. My eighth grade year, I was pulled up to play on the B-team, which normally consists of ninth and tenth graders. I began playing on the varsity in the ninth grade. Unfortunately, we did not win many games, however, our team did make it to the state playoffs. In the ninth grade, I received an All-Region award as a short stop.

During the summer between my eighth and ninth grade years, I played second base on a traveling softball team from Lee County called the Extreme Whippets. We placed second at the Camfast World Series in Conyers, Georgia. I had a lot of fun playing with the girls on my team. I made many new friends, and experienced another level of softball that had not yet experienced playing school ball.

My tenth grade year, our school team had another losing season. Our team was very young. It consisted of tenth graders, ninth graders, and one eight grader. We only won two games. In the midst of defeat, we found victory because we kept our heads up. We did not left losing keep us from playing the game. We finished our season out strong. As a tenth grader, I was awarded an All-Region Honorable Mention. I was not happy that we had a losing season. By experiencing that, I acquired a bad taste in my mouth that I never wanted to have again. My goal is to make varsity softball at Westwood just as popular as all of the other sports. I will keep trying, and never give up.
