One Act Play State Champions

I love acting. The feeling that I get from being on stage and performing for people gives me an exciting rush. We are very privileged to able to have a one-act play team at Westwood. At our school, our play team is known for producing wonderful plays every year. I was lucky enough to be able to participate in the drama club my eighth, ninth, tenth grade year. Our drama team has produced plays like Aladdin, The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree, and our most recent, Oz. In Aladdin, I played Sheba, one of Jasmin's hand maidens. In the Lady Pirates of Captain Bree, I played Millie, a singing pirate. In Oz, I was very fortunate to obtain one of the leading roles as the tin man. Our one-act play team spends months preparing for the region and state competitions which are held at Darton College in Albany, Georgia. During my eight and ninth grade years, the awards given at the region and state were passed on a scale of Good, Great, Excellent, and Superior. During those years, our team obtained many superior awards at both region and state. My tenth grade year was different, however. The GISA, Georgia Independent School Association, changed the rules back to a competition with first and second place winners at region and first, second, and third places at state. My tenth grade year our team placed first at the region competition and were guaranteed a place at state. Our team had our best performance at state and clenched the state title for our classification. We also had many actors that received individual awards. Our actresses who played Dorothy and the Wicked Witch of the West both received All-State Honorable Mention. The actresses who played the Lion, Scarecrow, and myself received All-State Superior acting awards. Acting is one of my passions. I love to see the smiles on peoples faces and see them laughing and enjoying themselves. I am glad that I got to experience a state championship, and I will remain hungry for one in the years to come.
